Hand Warmers DIY

Pin It Now!

I have cold hands and feet all the time.  This is primarily because I have Raynaud Disease which causes my hands and feet to stay cold and turn blue.  I'm the crazy woman wearing gloves in the grocery store in July.  Yep, that was me.  It's just painful and irritating. I have my cold feet on Steve every single night, bless his heart.  So, I pulled out my scrap fabric and got busy.  This is such an easy project and they turned out really cute.

Here's the DIY:

To make one pair of hand warmers, you'll need:
(4) 5 inch squares of cute fabric
(4) 5 inch squares of flannel (optional)
1 1/2 cups of jasmine rice (not cooked, duh)
a funnel
sewing machine & general sewing supplies

Make a "fabric sandwich" like this…
(BTW, this is scrap flannel that will not show! I'm so OVER chevron.)

Then sew the sandwich together around the edges, leaving a 1.5 inch opening on one side.

Trim the corners as shown below.
Then, turn the fabric right side out (through the little gap hole).
Push out the corners.  A crochet hook works perfectly for this job.

Next, take a funnel and fill your pouch with rice.  Each warmer holds about 3/4 cup.
I couldn't find my kitchen funnel so I made one out of tagboard.   Isn't it pretty?

And this is the reality shot of a DIY project. Too funny, so real!

Then, you just stitch up your opening and that's it.
Pop them in the microwave for 30 seconds.
They will stay warm for the longest time.

Here's my little tip and fun find…
Put on a sports bra (if you're a girl or not, up to you)
and then stick these in the back, on your shoulder area.
It's a walking, working heating pad and soothes those sore shoulder muscles.
My shoulders, neck and back hurt all the time.
Probably due to all the sewing, painting, building craziness I have going on everyday!

  1. Love it! Made these a few years ago as my husband works outside all winter. To fill them I used pie weights which are a little more costly but worked well too. I love the idea of the rice, good to know they stay warm! I love reading your blog, you inspire me!
