DIY Silhouette Cameo & Vinyl

***The font I used for this cup is called PHARMACY.
Click the word "pharmacy" and it will take you to the free download on DaFont.*** (This portion of the post was added at a later date, after I received many questions about the font used.)

I got this beauty for Christmas in November.  I ordered it for myself and then told Steve that he could consider my Christmas present taken care of :)  Of course, I still got (as expected) a real Christmas present too.

I bought it to make a huge subway art project that featured all of our past street addresses, etc.   It was a surprise Christmas gift for Steve and it turned out okay but not nearly as cool as it could've been if I had read the Cameo Manual before tackling the project.  What can I say... I was acting like a man.

Now I happen to have a best friend "JOY"who is perhaps the craftiest person I've ever met in my life!  She is seriously CREATIVE TO THE CORE and I asked her to give me a "short course" yesterday on the Silhouette Cameo.

Joy and Me
This picture was taken yesterday... hahaha... 20 years ago!  I couldn't resist :)  Look at that hair, Girl!

Apparently nothing has changed since the 7th grade because ALL DAY TODAY,  I could hear my mother's voice in my head saying, "YOU NEVER LISTEN!"  I thought I was listening Joy, really.  But maybe I was preoccupied with taking pics, etc because when I got the thing out this morning and started attempting to cut a name out of vinyl (like she did in 3 minutes), it was tearing and peeling and just a complete nightmare!!!!

I finally figured out the problem and it wasn't the Silhouette Cameo's fault...
it wasn't the Short Course Teacher's fault (aka Joy)...
but it was my very own fault... because the blade wasn't snapped in correctly.
An entire roll of vinyl later... I figured it out.

I almost listed the Cameo on Craig's List today. Seriously!  But now, all is good in the world and 3 hours after I started, when it finally cut something correctly, I was addicted.  I made several things in a matter of minutes and I'm thrilled!

So, here's the deal.  They have these awesome TUMBLERS at Sam's Club (6 for $20) for hot or cold beverages and they are BIG, I'm talking 24 oz and dishwasher and microwave safe.  Of course, my rather crafty friend, Joy, found these too :)  What about TEACHER's Gifts?  Can you imagine?  I'm all over it!

I started out making cups for my 2 kids...
Cute, huh?

Then I had all these leftover polka dots just needing to be stuck on something so I covered my laptop and put my name on it too.  Tiffany Blue, don't you just love that color?  I got the cover on Amazon.  LOVE!

NOW, isn't that fun?

A couple of VINYL tricks that I learned from Joy...

*You can buy vinyl on eBay for dirt cheap and she prefers it to the expensive stuff
*White is the color she uses most
*Use clear contact paper from the dollar tree to transfer your vinyl, she prefers it to transfer paper
*Dollar Tree also has cake carriers you can (vinyl) monogram and give as wedding gifts.  She made some and they are absolutely adorable!

You can view Joy's BLOG... "Joy in the Little Things" at http://www.joylittlethings.blogspot.com/

I learned this tip MYSELF...

*The little hook tool will HURT VERY VERY BADLY when you hook it into your thumb!

  1. Have you tried washing the cups with vinyl on them? I was going to try and make them and wasn't sure if the vinyl holds up well after washing?

    1. The vinyl holds up so well. I've never had any come off and I always wash them in the dishwasher.

  6. Does this stay on when you wash them? Do you have to use a special vinyl for things like this?

  7. I'm curious about the washing of them too. I've been trying to research it online, but I haven't seen anyone really post about that.

  8. Can you please tell me the size of the circles you made for the tumblers?

  9. The circles measure exactly one inch. This is just regular self-adhesive vinyl and it stays on like it's permanent. I have washed them in the dishwasher over and over again and they still look like new. I hope this helps :) Thanks for stopping by D & S!

    1. Hi Nicole! You said that the vinyl stays on good after being in the dishwasher which is awesome! What vinyl did you use? The silhouette brand or another? Thanks!

    2. I have used many different brands and have found that they all work well. You can find cheaper sources on Etsy, some stores even carry patterned vinyl. I have bought vinyl at Hobby Lobby before, as well. I hope this helps. Thanks for stopping by.

  11. I am having a problem getting the bubbles out of the vinyl after applying to cups. I'm smoothing it out before I take the transfer paper off. Any suggestions?
